Our Story
zen-spiral began in 2011 when three professionals from different backgrounds found themselves frustrated by the same thing: the gap between what interior and repair services promised and what they delivered.
James had spent a decade in architectural restoration. Marina brought experience from high-end residential design. David's background was in heritage carpentry. Each had seen too many projects where corners were cut, where design decisions lacked context, where client needs were secondary to convenience.
They started working together on a Victorian terrace renovation in South London. The project required both technical restoration skill and sensitive design thinking. It needed someone who could repair damaged cornicing with period-appropriate techniques while reimagining the layout for modern living. Most companies could do one or the other. Few could do both well.
That first project took four months. The clients were delighted. More importantly, the team realised they'd found something: a way of working that refused to compromise on either craft quality or design intelligence.

Meet the Leadership
James Patterson
Managing Director
James oversees operations and leads our restoration projects. His background in architectural conservation brings rigour to everything we do. He's particularly passionate about period properties and has written extensively on Victorian restoration techniques.
Marina Silva
Design Director
Marina leads our interior design work, bringing sensitivity and precision to every project. Trained at the Royal College of Art, she has a particular talent for understanding how people interact with their spaces and translating that into design decisions that work.
David Thompson
Master Craftsman
David heads our carpentry team and maintains our quality standards across all trades. A third-generation carpenter, he completed his training with a conservation specialist and brings both traditional skills and modern problem-solving to complex projects.

How We're Different
Many companies in our field position themselves as either repair specialists or design firms. We recognised early on that this division creates problems for clients.
If you hire a repair company, you get technical competence but often limited design input. The work is done properly, but opportunities to improve the space are missed. If you hire a design firm, you get beautiful concepts but sometimes impractical execution or insufficient attention to underlying structural issues.
We deliberately built a team that bridges this gap. Our designers understand building construction. Our craftspeople understand design principles. Everyone speaks both languages, which means better outcomes for you.
